Protect our local hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are classified as vulnerable to extinction and have sadly disappeared from many parts of the Borough. We urge Merton Council to take action to protect our remaining hedgehog populations and ensure this much-loved species can thrive for generations to come.
We, the undersigned, call on the Council to:
• Safeguard vital habitats by adopting hedgehog-friendly management practices in green spaces, school grounds, WildWays, and allotments.
• Monitor local hedgehog populations by installing wildlife cameras at key sites, managed by volunteers.
• Prevent road collisions by placing hedgehog warning signs on key routes where they are most at risk.
• Empower residents by sharing guidance from the People's Trust for Endangered Species on how to make their neighbourhoods hedgehog friendly.
• Protect green spaces from being lost to excessive paving and artificial surfaces, which destroy essential habitats. Keeping natural green spaces also helps prevent flooding and increases resilience to climate change.
