Motspur Park - Step Free Success!
WORK STARTS ON MOTSPUR PARK STATION AFTER A DECADE LONG CAMPAIGN BY LOCAL COUNCILLORS
Work commenced on the new Motspur Park station – including step-free access – earlier this year after a 10 year campaign by the Merton Liberal Democrats.
At first this was turned down by Network Rail and was not initially supported by the Labour-run Council. Eventually, after securing match-funding from the Council full funding was finally confirmed in 2020 and building work finally commenced in March of this year.
A new, covered footbridge with lifts will replace the current structure and will create step-free access to the platforms. West Barnes councillor and London Assembly member Hina Bokhari said: ‘It has been fantastic to watch the work onMotspur Park station taking place after such a long campaign by a succession of Liberal Democrat councilors in West Barnes. Making transport accessible is so important, and theLiberal Democrats will continue to ensure that public transport in Merton and beyond is an option for everyone.
“Though this is a great victory for us, our job is not complete and we will continue to work to make Raynes Park step-free.” Work is expected to be completed at Motspur Park in early 2024, with access to the station only available from the west side via Claremont Avenue during the construction phase.
